iPlayer Desktop version for Mac and Linux systems – Unveiled By BBC!

The BBC has done a collaboration with Adobe Systems to come up with a novel public beta of the BBC iPlayer Desktop application for Mac and Linux computers. The new download manager is based on the Adobe Air technology and at the same time it enables cross platform support.

Features:

  • Users can stream programmes for up to seven days after broadcast or download,
  • The iPlayer is the BBC’s online media player and the main benefit is that users can watch the downloaded content for up to one long month.
  • However users having Mac and Linux systems can also handle downloads now.

According to the BBC’s head of digital media technology, Anthony Rose, “The cross-platform nature of Adobe AIR means the iPlayer will work with Open Source and Apple Mac computers ‘out of the box’ on 18 December. The iPlayer now supports three separate DRM technologies Microsoft, Adobe, and the OMA standards for mobiles. We may embrace other DRMs as needed.”

So if you are really very eager to try out this new version of the iPlayer can get it from the Labs section of the iPlayer site. But I would recommend that you should go for the trial version first! Because the finished version should be launched around February 2009.
