Toshiba is planning to demo 512GB solid-state drives, which could make their way to laptops and other devices in the later part of the year 2009.

512 GB SSDs, that are announced by the company are the highest storage capacity announced for storage capacities of solid-state drives intended for consumer devices like laptops. As far as the current market is concerned, a lot of PC makers today offer 128GB SSDs for laptops, but this one will surely act as a revolution in the field of SSDs!

SSDs store data on flash memory chips and that is why their function is just similar to that of hard drives. But their benefit is that they consume less power and have no moving parts! But the storage capacity is way less than those of hard drives!

Here are some of the features of Toshiba 512GB SSDs:

  • Drive will be offered in a 2.5in form factor.
  • Target audience is those who have laptops, desktops and home entertainment systems.
  • A sequential read speed of 240MBps.
  • A sequential write speed of 200MBps.

The new Toshiba SSDs will be on display at the International Consumer Electronics Show to be held in Las Vegas between Jan. 8 and 11 in the year 2009, the company said. No verdict on the price tag till now!
