Nokia Launches Mobile Payment SIM Card with 6216 Classic Phones

Nokia has launched a new range of 6216 Classic handsets, which have a support for near field communication (NFC) technology on SIM card. This will make it easier for operators to offer mobile payment systems to their customers.

NFC is a wireless technology and has range of few inches. It is easy to use and have a quick set us. The users can pay for their goods by using NFC enabled handset in front of a contactless reader.

Jeremy Belostock, Head, Near Field Communication, Nokia said, “The 6216 classic is the third phone that has NFC support but the first amongst all with a secure element of technology. It can be used to store the credit card information on the SIM card”.

Belostock said, “The secure element is stored in the phone itself. Operators have been wishing to get the technology stored into the SIM card, as this makes it easier for them to offer the service. End users on the other hand can just use their phone in case they don’t want to bring their wallets out”.

The phone is expected to reach the markets of Europe and Asia by the third quarter of 2009 and it will be approximately priced at Rs. 9,840 excluding taxes and subsidies.

“Users have started utilizing NFC technology. This month, a Malaysian operator Maxis – working with Visa, Maybank and Nokia have started to offer mobile payment and some other operators are also on the way to adopt this trend. If we talk about phone vendors, Nokia is the only name so far that has been pushing the technology. More choices will be available in market by next year”, said Belostock.
