Microsoft Gives into Public Demand and Announces the Extension of Windows XP Support Until 2014
June 26, 2008 by Staff Techdrunk · Leave a Comment
In accordance to public demand and pressure Microsoft has finally given in. The company has decided to offer technical support for Windows XP with updates and security patches for an extended period until April 2014. However, the compnay declared that it will not go back on its decision to discontinue Windows XP sales after June 30.
This implies that after June 30, Microsoft will stop distributing Windows XP as a stand-alone product, as well as stop licensing it to PC manufacturers like Dell, HP, Lenovo, and others. However, it doesn’t mean that XP will disappear overnight. Consumers may still find copies of the software or computers pre-loaded with it for months, as stores and PC makers typically work through their inventories. Also, as per an announcement made at Computex earlier this month, the software ginat said that “’nettops’ better defined as PCs with limited hardware or ultra-low cost PCs will be available with Windows XP until the end of January 2009.”
Additionally Microsoft is allowing customers , under another program, to downgrade Vista systems to XP through a loophole in the company’s licensing terms. So those purchasing a copy of Vista will also be able to run XP at no additional cost.
Microsoft’s move to extend the deadline for technical support is primarily influenced by large business customers, who haven’t yet upgraded their systems to Windows Vista. The companies have been reluctant to switch to Vista due to the costs and heavy system requirements involved. So, the prediction from recent analysts is that “large business customers might just skip Vista and continue with XP until the release of Windows 7, which is scheduled for release in 2010.”
Imation Unveils Half Inch USB Flash Drive!
June 26, 2008 by Staff Techdrunk · Leave a Comment
Imation has unveiled the Atom Flash Drive, a 1.5-inch long tiny portable storage device which is no larger than a paperclip and can store up to 8GB of digital files. The USB mobile storage device which will be available in different versions that can store 1 GB, 2 GB, 4 GB or 8 GB of data.

Weighing less than one ounce and measuring a half-inch wide, the Atom Flash Drive is the smallest USB flash drive from the Oakdale, Minnesota.-based storage vendor. The Atom Flash Drive drive is currently available at prices ranging from US$18 to $100 based on its capacity.
Analysts say that “as the prices of USB flash drives drop, the easy-to-use portable storage devices are gaining popularity among mid-size and large corporate customers to store, transport and share digital files among co-workers, business units and partners”. However, they also note that “the technology can pose significant security risks if they are lost, stolen or are handled carelessly by employees.”
It is because recent surveys such as the Ponemon Institute LLC survey of 691 IT professionals last December found that “only 25% of workers would report a lost USB flash drive, compared to 78% who would likely notify IT departments about a missing laptop.”
But the best thing about the Imation’s Atom Flash Drive is that it provides password protection and drive partitioning capabilities to secure data on the portable device. The tool supports Microsoft Windows Vista and is also compatible with Windows Vista ReadyBoost technology, which enables the USB flash drive to serve as an additional memory cache.
The Features of the ultimate data storage portability can be summed up as follows:
- Enhanced for Windows® Vista ReadyBoost
- Password protection and drive partitioning software included
- No software installation required
- Five-year limited warranty
